The theme for the recent Oshkosh Garden Club Flower Show, held under the Dome at the Oshkosh Public Library on July 18-19, 2008, was “The Garden of Readin’.” The show was open to the public from noon to 5:45 p.m. on Friday, July 18 and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 19. The flower show was judged by National Council Flower Show judges from outside the Oshkosh area.
The floral design portion of the show featured floral interpretations of book titles. Eight entries of table artistry, 8 miniature entries, and 4 creative exhibition designs were on display. The floral design part of the show was open only to members of the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation.
< Rose Mansell garnered a blue ribbon and the Table Artistry Award for her romantic table design interpreting “The Wedding” by Nicholas Sparks.
< Ann Gratton won the blue ribbon, the Petite Award, and the Award of Design Excellence for her darling miniature design reflecting the spirit of “Stuart Little” by E.B. White.
The horticultural portion of the flower show included leaf and flower specimens and container-grown plants (indoor and outdoor). Community members were invited to compete. A number of outstanding specimens earned blue ribbons from the judges, with Awards of Merit given to Liz Murken for the dahlia 'Goldahlia' and Lee Ann Lilly
for the caladium ‘Carolyn Wharton.’ Ann Gratton received the Growers Choice Award for both her terrarium and foliage houseplant, as well as the Award of Horticulture Excellence for an outstanding fiscus plant. An educational display completed the show. Mary Ellen Sedlacheck created a table and DVD display about conservation entitled “It’s Easy Being Green.”
